What Happens During a Root Canal?

The process of undergoing a root canal requires several steps, but the results you can expect are worth the time and effort.

Your dentist will start by administering local anesthesia and thoroughly cleaning the area. Next, they will isolate the tooth with a dental dam so that moisture does not reach the area. Your dentist will then make a small opening in the crown so that the interior can be accessed. Using specialized instruments, the pulp will be removed, and the canals will be cleaned to remove any infection.

After the tooth is cleared, a substance known as gutta-percha will be applied, filling in the area and sealing the tooth off from future reinfection. Taking dental impressions of your tooth, your dentist will have lab technicians create a custom dental crown that will be placed over the vulnerable structure when ready.
